The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence have released for the second time their Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI). The index measures and compares the world’s 370 major container ports by their operational performance in 2021. It is used by major players in the global economy. The ranking is based on the amount of time ships must spend at the port to complete their unloading/loading during the year 2021.
A year that has seen unprecedented port congestion and major disruptions in global supply chains. Europe is among the worst performers, while ports in the Middle East occupy four of the top five places …

Global Container Port Performance Index
The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence CPPI is a ranking that takes into account all the technical elements from the arrival of the ship to its departure from the port:
- Unloading/loading
- Duration of calls
- Container size
- Number of movements made
The methodology considers five distinct ship size groups, due to the greater fuel savings and emissions reductions that larger ships can achieve. This is an important factor to avoid penalizing ports that handle smaller vessels.
Ranking of the world’s best ports:
Performance of Middle Eastern ports
The top three global container ports are made up of three Middle Eastern ports. Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Port, followed by Oman’s Salalah Port, then Qatar’s Hamad Port.
The Chinese ports are also very well ranked with the Yangshan Port of Shanghai (4th), the Port of Ningbo (7th) and the Port of Guangzhou (9th). It is important to note that the ranking does not take into account the recent measures due to the 2022 confinements. The port of Shanghai, recently reopened, was closed for more than two months during this period! Also noteworthy is the fall of the port of Yokohama (Japan) from being the best port in the world in 2020 to 10th place in 2021.
In North America, the top three are the ports of Virginia (23rd) and Miami (29th) in the USA, followed by Halifax in Canada (46th). Regarding the African continent, the first three positions are occupied by the port of Tangier in Morocco (6), the port of Said (15th) and Damietta (58th) in Egypt.
During the year 2021, European ports were particularly affected by the congestion problems that affected all supply chains due to the health crisis. The best European port is Algeciras in Spain, in 11th place (down one place from last year). The port of Barcelona is ranked 22nd.
Finally, concerning the French ports, out of the 370 ports that complete this ranking, only two ports managed to climb up the ranking: Le Havre 292nd and Marseille-Fos 315th.
